Melaware Pattern Design

Origins of Melaware

Melaware was a prominent brand of melamine tableware manufactured in the UK during the 1950s and 1960s. The term is a blend of melamine and hardware, representing the mid-century rise of durable, shatterproof plastic housewares.

Mid-Century Icon

Celebrated designers like Russel Wright and Raymond Loewy were contracted to create stylish Melmac sets, cementing it as a colorful, modern staple for the suburban family.

Melaware At The V&A

Melaware is included in museums around the world including the V&A in London.

Melaware Pattern Design

The appeal of Melaware to me, is the lovely bright colours and shiny finish. I have lots of charity shop finds shown in this pattern. The chicken-shaped egg cup was an East German version bought in Dresden.

Melaware Pattern Simplified

Taking a break I felt the pattern perhaps feels too busy? So I have created a new version with more white space (see below). To make it feel prettier I have added coloured spots designed to be an integral part of the pattern; each having its own shadow and highlight. What do you think? Which do you prefer?
