Boxy Pattern Design

The Origins of Boxy Pattern

Boxy is actually based on a series of hexagons. Each one moved down half the length of the side which gives the appearance of two rows of interlocking shapes.

Design Progression

In the two demos (left) I have indicated the hexagon origins. The first designs had see-through panels of colour. The second set of designs has solid blocks of colour which I think perhaps look stronger as a pattern. Which do you prefer?

Choosing Colours

The first colour combination was reds and blues. Where the lighter shades were a reduced saturation to give the appearance of being paler without reducing opacity which would have made them see-through.

Final Versions

I experimented with removing elements and then colouring the remaining ones in stark black and red. The final versions were stripped back further to almost black, white, and greys. Finishing with one that had no colours at all, just a simple key line.

Rotating By 90°

The whole design changes into almost ribbon shapes when rotated by 90 degrees. I love to experiment with my designs to keep exploring ideas for new patterns.
