Chain Link Pattern Design

The Origins of Chain Link

Chain link is a really simple pattern based on four circles where the diagonally opposite pair punch through to form the new link shape.

Design Progression

By colouring the various elements it was possible to create a simple 2-colour design. Adding a further ‘link’ meant it was possible to add an extra colour making the pattern more interesting.

Choosing Colours

The first colour combination was blue and grey. I reduced the saturation to give the appearance of being paler without reducing opacity which would have made them see-through.

Final Versions

I like to experiment with my patterns to make sure I haven’t missed a clever combination. For this pattern I have a version with four links – each with a different colour. But in the end the simpler ones were more graphic.
