Wonky Spirals Pattern Design

Fun Pattern Brief

A lot of my pattern designs have been carefully crafted, this pattern design is totally different. I started out with the brief to myself to keep it rough and fun.

Assembling the Parts

There are nine different wonky spirals. Each one is a very rough white spiral shape made with straight lines – not curves. Then on top I added a wobbly pattern of rough crisscross lines. As if someone had badly embroidered across the white spaces.

Colouring the Pattern

To keep with the fun vibe I chose bright orange and blue as background colours. Further colour variations were added later.

Defining the Pattern Repeat

The design uses nine variations, so to make the pattern repeat simple I created a 3 x 3 grid, then moved them around until they worked together.

Testing The Pattern Repeat

These full-screen versions use actual pattern repeats, set to repeat and scaled using my CSS style sheet. This is the ideal way to test if a pattern repeat works.

Alternative Versions

I just couldn’t resist tidying up the design so there are alternative designs shown in the small swatches above. Which do you prefer?

Alternative Colourways

I experimented with other colour combinations. My favourites were still orange and blue, but there are some others I tried – shown above. The rejected ones include a rather nice teal colour, it just was too conservative.

Buying My Designs

Products featuring my pattern designs are available to buy from my shops hosted by Spoonflower and Contrado. As well as fabrics by the metre, they can produce my designs in a range of home decor items including; tablecloths, bedding, cushions, wallpaper, cushions and wrapping paper / gift wrap.
