Ferns Pattern Design
The Origins of Ferns Pattern
These designs are based on my Blue Star Ferns Phlebodium – which is not like a normal fern. Despite all these leaves looking like they came from different plants they are all from the same plant!
Keeping Leaves
As the plant shed leaves I photographed each one for reference. Most of the leaves don’t lie flat so have had to tape them down to record their shapes.
Design Progression
I had originally wanted to use the real leaves as they are a rather beautiful blue colour but as you can see here they are not only inconsistent they are very wonky!
Most of the leaves had to be doctored when I made them all white. Curving the stems and moving some of the leaflets has helped to perfect nature – perhaps.
Colour Variations
I kept all of the leaves white then altered the background colour. I have a vast range of swatches of my favourite colours so the nice job was working through all of them to find the best combinations.
Blue Star Fern Poster
This poster is based on the Ferns pattern design using a lot of the same elements. The fun part was finding a pair of fonts that worked together to show the common and latin names of the plant. Technically the latin should be in italics but that’s artistic license! I have shown two colourways with the headings 70% white making it slightly see-through. Plus a second pair with the headings set to be 50% black.
