Home Town Pattern Design

Evolution of Home Town Pattern Design

This pattern started as a series of house illustrations that celebrate the houses from my past. Some I’ve lived in, others I have simply admired enough to illustrate them.

Combining the Illustrations

I have combined the illustrations before as posts on Instagram, but each one was isolated. I wanted the new Home Town pattern to overlap as if seen from above. There are two rows of houses, that repeat. The tricky part was trying to get a flow along the ‘road’ so that they appeared to be realistic. The two rows are staggered to make the pattern repeat less obvious.

Testing The Pattern Repeat

These full-screen versions use actual pattern repeats, set to repeat and scaled using my CSS style sheet. This is the ideal way to test if a pattern repeat works.

Buying My Designs

Products featuring my pattern designs are available to buy from my shops hosted by Spoonflower and Contrado. As well as fabrics by the metre, they can produce my designs in a range of home decor items including; tablecloths, bedding, cushions, wallpaper, cushions and wrapping paper / gift wrap.

Individual Houses

Colouring the Background of the Pattern

All the houses remain the same in each colourway. The only changes are the background colours. I think the most successful colour is the dark emerald green one. I usually also explore using black but in most cases it is just too dark and cold to use.
