Homes Pattern Design
Ideas Behind my Homes Pattern Design
I like the layering effect when you get seemingly random shapes overlapping – especially so with buildings and houses. This pattern uses 17 different buildings stacked behind each other to form the pattern repeat.
Making the Pattern Repeat
Once I had a selection of shapes and rooflines I juggled them around to find the best combination. But the real challenge was to then repeat this pattern and fill the gaps. The pattern starts at the bottom right duplicating the buildings to the left. Another row duplicates this above. But in-between these is another row staggered between – effectively half drop pattern repeat.
Colouring the Pattern
I find the designs I like the most have a limited colour palette. The first design shown here uses shades of orange to purple and all have the same blue coloured windows.
Alternative Colourways
The second colourway was when I thought of all the houses being covered in snow. Then a snowy evening variation. Finally it is nighttime and all the windows are dark – except a few with their lights on.
Testing The Pattern Repeat
These full-screen versions use actual pattern repeats, set to repeat and scaled using my CSS style sheet. This is the ideal way to test if a pattern repeat works.
