Cherry Bakewells Pattern Design
Cherry Bakewell Tarts
The appeal of these Cherry Bakewells was the wobbliness of the pastry and the random positioning of the cherries.
Mr Kipling describes these Cherry Bakewells as pastry cases with a layer of plum and raspberry jam and almond flavoured sponge, topped with icing and half a glacé cherry.
Manipulating the Photo
Taking my original photo I cut out the cakes then auto traced them in Illustrator giving its distinctive array of oddly shaped blocks of colour. I simplified the colours to only: 3 for the pastry, 2 for the cherry and its shadow and made the icing plain white.
Creating Backgrounds
I imagined the tarts lined up on a simple gingham cloth as if for sale at the Women’s Institute. The gingham check was created from a series of wobbly lines. I think the most successful is perhaps the simple red or blue check backgrounds.
Drop Shadow
Finally, the drop shadow below each tart was added to make the design more three dimensional.
Testing The Pattern Repeat
The full-screen versions use actual pattern repeats, set to repeat using my CSS style sheet. This is the ideal way to test if a pattern repeat works. There is also the added bonus that I don’t need large, full screen images taking up extra time to download.
