Hexagon Pattern Design

Hexagon H-hexagon spotting x90

Why Hexagons?

Apart from triangles and squares, hexagons are the only other shape that will perfectly fit together. This makes it a perfect pattern to create patchwork quilts – hence my client Carolyn Forster’s interest – see below.

Interlocking Hexagons

Hexagons align to a grid of 60° and 120° angles. They also fit six equilateral triangles inside too.

Carolyn Forster and Hexagons

This design could have been called Carolyn named after my friend Carolyn Forster who, with 5 patchwork quilting books featuring hexagon patterns is definitely the Hexagons expert!

Pattern Development

The darker blue versions were the starting designs. The six sided star shape is dominant of course but the hexagon shapes between had to look good too. Once you notice them you will see what I mean.

Colour Combinations

I have a theory that men prefer darker colours and women lighter but I have done zero research so you may find you have different preferences. Are there some you like / hate?

Testing The Pattern Repeat

The full-screen versions use actual pattern repeats, set to repeat using my style sheet (CSS). Meaning I don’t need large images taking up extra time to download. The computer repeats the pattern itself! The scale of the patterns can be altered too, again using the CSS style sheet. I find it a useful way to check the pattern repeat works and that there aren’t any odd glitches at the joins. This pattern took at least 2 hours of adjusting to get the pattern repeat to work properly without any odd spaces.

Buying My Designs

Products featuring my pattern designs are available to buy from my shops hosted by Spoonflower and Contrado. As well as fabrics by the metre, they can produce my designs on T-Shirts and on a range of home decor items including; tablecloths, bedding, cushions, wallpaper, cushions and gift wrap paper.
